The fable of the monkey and the fisherman

The fable of the monkey and the fisherman

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter

Some of the fables passed down can lead us to accept information that does not serve us well.

Hello! I’m Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter, and you’re listening to the No Bullshit Coaching Advice Podcast. Today I want to use a parable to teach something that I think is important. Please stick with me after I read this parable because I will give the traditional interpretation as well as my interpretation.

The fable reads: “A monkey perched on a tall tree saw some fishermen throwing their nets into the river and carefully observed their process. After a while, The fisherman gave up fishing. I wanted to go home to eat and leave the fishing net on the shore. The monkey, the most imitative of animals, descends from the treetops and strives to do the justice he sees. He took the net and flew into the river, but was entangled in the net and drowned. He said to himself with his last breath: “I got the right service.” I would never catch fish with a net for anything. “

This table tells us that not only will we not gain any benefit from doing something we do not fully understand, it may actually harm others and ourselves.

This is the traditional explanation. However, he was influenced by this interpretation. After a while, most of us stop trying. We are trained to be content with the life we have, the work we experience, even if we are unhappy, miserable, tired and bored.

For example, how many of you work in a job that you hate, or worse, have learned to live with over time? How many of you have put up with something in a relationship, marriage, or other situation simply because it has become a habit for you?

I am not trying to learn tolerance, but I am trying to encourage you not to listen to this fable. That’s because the fable is about labor. From the time she was in school until now, we have become accustomed to suffering. We know life will never be better than it is now. Instead, start thinking about your desires, your dreams, what you want to live for in life.

That’s really what you should be doing instead of settling for mediocrity. Who says you should be mediocre or live a mediocre life?

So, I just want to remind you to continue to make a bigger difference in this world. Keep looking for opportunities and ways to expand yourself, even if you keep your current job, and even if you maintain your current relationships. Try new things in every aspect. Try changing jobs. I’m not going to encourage you to get divorced immediately; I want to clarify this…

Try doing things differently instead of enduring things. After all, this fable is not meant to help you live the life you want. It is meant to help you come to terms with life as it is.

So, I hope you found this helpful. I’ll be back soon with more.
