The easiest way to negotiate a higher salary for yourself
Let’s say you tried my easiest way to get yourself a higher salary and they said no. At that point, you reveal the truth (just a quick refresher, the easiest way to negotiate for a higher salary is to first say, “Wow! That’s a pretty good offer. I’d like to consider it.” In their mind, they start to get nervous. Then you try to get them to do “a little better.” If you watch the video, there’s a detailed demonstration.)
The second easiest way to respond to their rejection, if you do this, is when you reveal that you have another offer. If you don’t, and you’re going to reject this one anyway, you can still talk about another offer because you have nothing to lose. If you have nothing, it’s up to you whether you want to bluff
If that’s not good enough for you, there’s nothing to lose by bluffing. Call your bluff. If you’re going to accept the offer, you can’t risk them saying, “Okay, take another offer.” And then you start working to get the offer back. They go and you look like a fool.
The second easiest way is to disclose that you have another job offer for $X and that you prefer their job to that one. “Why are you doing this? Can’t you be more flexible?” The other also got a good job at a good company. But when I go to the bank, they expect me to have enough money to live on. They didn’t want me to be in debt. As it turns out, I do have to consider that their quote was about $7500 more than yours. Can you at least match that?
Often this makes it seem like a big deal and is so difficult that the planet needs to be split apart and you need a lot of consent from different people to work on it. “That’s okay, because the other company wants to make a decision…” You tell them the date is two days away. “They’ve been waiting patiently. They knew I was interested in the job, but they started pressuring me and I held them off for another two days. When you believe you can get back to me? Because if I didn’t make a decision within two days, I would have accepted another offer.”
What this does is it turns everything around so that it’s no longer your responsibility, it’s theirs. If they match that number or match the number you told him you would take, whatever it is, you will take the job.
Therefore, the second easiest way is to disclose that you have another job offer when the time is right.
