Tell me something you learned from a non-work-related experience

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter

Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter provides a framework for how to use this question.

I’m Jeff Altman, big game hunter. I’m known as the “Big Hunter” because I’ve been searching for leaders and employees in organizations for over 40 years.

Let’s talk about one of those nerve-wracking, nerve-wracking interview questions, but none of them are particularly difficult. My idea is, be prepared for everything, listen to some questions, get some ideas for answers, do it in your specific way, but try to work within the framework that I will provide

So, today’s tough question is, “So, tell me what you might have learned from a non-work experience that you think helped you?”

So this is an invitation to talk about the volunteering you are involved in. So the ideal way to frame your answer is that if you work in management you want to talk not about management but about action and remind people how thinking from a “doer’s perspective” can benefit you as you lead.

If you are a staff-level individual and you have the opportunity to lead, your efforts in leadership will be appreciated. So, the idea is to reverse both situations.

Again, as a manager and above, a reminder of what it’s like to be a doer. As a doer, you want to talk about what you’ve learned as a manager, director. . . Take on some kind of leadership role that you don’t normally get at work but aspire to.
