Mastering the Pivot: Your Guide to Career Reinvention

When people hear the word “Ikigai,” they probably know the definition, and if you don’t know the definition, it’s the intersection of what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you get paid to do. It’s gorgeous, but people misuse the word, and they focus on the beginning—what you like, what you’re good at, what the world needs, maybe—and they ignore the “what do you get paid” part of it. So if you focus too much on something you love and are good at, it will overwhelm you.

What you really need to do is think about product-market fit—how what you offer meets a need in the world so you can make a living. If you’re changing careers, it’s one thing to do work you love; It’s another thing to do work you love and get paid for it. So don’t ignore this.
