Develop your LinkedIn mission statement

EP 3116 Most people miss the LinkedIn opportunity.
Well, let’s talk about one of the most powerful and most overlooked pieces of real estate you can own online. I’m talking about your LinkedIn profile. Today, we’re flipping the script from a history lesson to a powerful vision for the future.
So let me ask you this directly. When you look at your LinkedIn profile now, is it just a resume, you know, a list of everything you’ve ever done? Or is it a vision, a roadmap for where you want to go next? Because trust me, a little shift in perspective changes everything. Do you know where this vision should exist? It’s right there in the “About” section.
Seriously, this is the biggest missed opportunity in 99% of profiles. Many people think of it as a dusty old summary of past job responsibilities. This completely fails to reflect who you are and the value you bring.
I mean, look at the difference here. The old trick is to look in the rearview mirror, right? This is a passive list of things you do. But the new approach is a forward-looking mission statement.
It’s very active. It is you who plants a flag and declares that this is the value I create. This is where I’m going.
This is not a historical report. This is a statement of intent. This really gets to the heart of the matter.
Once you reach a certain point in your career, the entire conversation has to change. People hire you for more than just what you’ve done. They are investing in the impact you will have.
The focus must shift from your past achievements to your future contributions. Think of it this way. Skills are your foundation.
You absolutely need them. They keep you in the game. But they no longer make you stand out.
The interview is a performance: Did your script fail?
Your true distinction is your intelligence. This is your strategic insight, your intuition about how things really work. About section, this is the perfect place to show off your intelligence rather than just listing your skills.
Okay, now we understand why, right? It’s about looking forward. So let’s look at the good stuff and how to do it. I’m going to walk you through a super simple formula you can use like today to rewrite your “about” section and turn it into the forward-thinking story we’ve been talking about.
It’s a simple three-step formula. First, you define your requirements. What’s a big and interesting problem in your industry that you’re really passionate about solving? Start there.
Secondly, you need to position your own value. This is where you connect the dots and demonstrate exactly how your unique background makes you the best person to solve the problem. Third, you state your mission.
You just have to stand up and declare your vision and commitment. You show them you give it your all. When you do that, gosh, that’s where the magic really happens.
You revolutionized the game. You’re no longer just a person applying for jobs, you become an in-demand expert attracting the right opportunities, opportunities that truly align with your mission. And the benefits are huge.
I mean, you’re no longer just listing tasks. You are demonstrating your strategic thinking. This task-oriented approach works like a magnet.
It connects you with like-minded leaders and companies. You start attracting opportunities that feel like they were tailor-made for you. Perhaps most importantly, it completely elevates the conversation well beyond what’s on your resume.
So I’ll leave you with one last question. Having done all of this, what story will your profile tell tomorrow? Are you stuck in the past or busy building the future? The choice is yours. What’s really cool is that you can start rewriting this story right now.
Use this 15-minute strategy to land a job (even before posting)
