Someone shared a post on LinkedIn about Justin Trudeau and his career, incorrectly identifying lessons from his career. Let me correct that for you.
Someone shared an interesting post on LinkedIn about Justin Trudeau and his career path. It sends the wrong message; I want to correct it. I am Jeff Altman, big game hunter. People hire me to provide no-nonsense job coaching and career advice around the world because I make the process of finding and succeeding in a job easier.
Justin Trudeau’s career path: 1994-1998: Snowboard instructor. 1998-2002: French and mathematics teacher. 2002 to 2008: CBC Radio host. 2013 to 2025: Prime Minister of Canada. 2025: Katy Perry’s boyfriend.
The message this guy wrote was, “If you get bored, change your career. Careers are not linear. Let this be a reminder: You can outdo yourself.” I don’t think he has fully adapted to the situation. I think he’s been preparing, shall we say, his whole life for this.
But the key part in all of this is how he achieves these transformations through his network of relationships. Not from snowboarders to French math teacher, but from French math teacher to radio host, and from radio host to Canadian Prime Minister. His last name has a lot to do with it. I’m sure he was counting on his father and mother’s relationships with Canadian officials.

Networking when you’re inexperienced
Focused on professional relationships, and he had personal relationships that he was able to leverage. Especially for someone just starting their career, I knew I didn’t want to ask my parents for help. You know, I went to the people who ended up hiring me, but I had no relationship with them. I make it more difficult for myself, and that’s one of the messages I want to convey to all of you: You don’t have to make it as difficult for yourself as you have done so far.
