How to Deal with Job Rejection

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter
Looking for a job is like dating. You go on a date and get rejected by someone you care about. You try to find a job and get rejected.
3 Effective Ways to Handle Rejection During the Executive Job Search Process
This is going to be even more common in the times we live in now. After all, millions of people are looking for work. Job openings may be limited.
Let’s be smart. Let’s be proactive and prepare for the inevitable. You will be rejected in some places.
I hope this show is helpful to you. I hope you don’t need this show. But it’s always better to be prepared than not.
That’s it, let’s get started. I want to talk to you about how to handle rejection during your job search. I’ve said it many times, interviewing and job hunting are a lot like going on a blind date.
You talk to people, you engage in conversations, your heart opens up, and sometimes, you get squashed. Unfortunately, the same is true in job hunting, whether you’re not getting a response from an employer on your resume, whether you’re dealing with a recruiter who didn’t submit your resume, whether you go into an interview and think you’ve nailed it but get nothing in return, or, you know, you get feedback too late. Whatever it is, it’s a lot like a date situation where you’ve opened up and you really, really care.
Beyond “No”
And now, refused. How you deal with the present starts with remembering that, like life in general, there will be rejection along the way. Not everyone likes you, right? I just want to say that if you ever find yourself in a situation where, you know, you suddenly get rejected and you thought you were doing a great job and then all of a sudden, you get rejected, the first thing to remember is to do a quick mental review.
Did you get any signals during interviews? Are there any signals to the recruiter that you are underperforming or have some shortcomings? So, go through the mental scan, because that’s really where your learning starts. Then from there, I would recommend contacting the organization, possibly a recruiter, ideally. You contact the recruiter and say, hey, look, you’ve decided not to submit me.
You’ve decided I’m not right for the job. For any feedback you may give me, I want to clarify that I am not here to argue with you. I’d like to know what you think of it.
I wonder what you saw that made you say no. Then you just listen. You won’t get into arguments.
You listen. You will learn from it. Because what it tells me is that if you get rejected and you have actual experience, maybe that doesn’t really prove that you didn’t demonstrate your knowledge on the subject well.
And you really need to practice interviewing, because if you do have expertise, you can sell it better. So again I put the responsibility back on you to learn from this. Now, this may sound hurtful.
But professionally speaking, understanding how others receive the information you share is really part of your growth. knew? And then from there, if you have to lick your wounds, lick your wounds. One of the things you can do along the way is reach out to people.
Look back on the people who love you and support you and really care about you and say, you know, I’m hurting today. I was turned down for the job I really wanted. In fact, they wouldn’t even submit me.
Or I was rejected for a job today. I interviewed them four times and they chose someone else. Offer help and receive support.
Let them buy you lunch. Ask them to take you for coffee. Let them listen and give you some supportive words.
3 Effective Ways to Handle Rejection During the Executive Job Search Process
The next thing I recommend is to put yourself in a position to look back on your successes. Because you have to get out there, and you have to do it fast. Being in a cave, in your home or apartment, you know, going, oh, woe is me, is not going to help you get into your next character.
You have to get out there as quickly as possible, lick your wounds, get support, and find something that will nourish you again. Then get out there and start networking more, talk to more recruiters, ask friends for recommendations on organizations you should contact, succeed in everything you’ve been doing so far, and at the same time, improve the way you present yourself so that if you’re in a rejection situation, you’ll be able to tell your story more effectively despite your experience. That’s it for today’s show.
