How to proofread your resume

You know you have to proofread your resume. What’s the best approach? In this video, big game hunter Jeff Altman discusses the best ways to proofread your resume.

3 Effective Ways to Handle Rejection During the Executive Job Search Process

Jeff Altman, “Big Game Hunter.” I’m known as the “Big Hunter” because I’ve been searching for leaders and employees for organizations for over 40 years. I want to give you some advice on proofreading your resume.

Everyone thinks they did it. Everyone thinks their resume has no spelling or grammatical errors, no punctuation errors, and no inappropriate words. I know this is true because they wouldn’t send me a resume if they didn’t think their resume was correct, but I’ve read a lot of resumes that had mistakes, words used incorrectly, you know, there and there, you know, they, there, I know most people can tell the difference, but sometimes software skips words.

No one noticed it passed. Here are my suggestions for proofreading. I know it’s a little weird, but I know it will work.

I want you to read your resume from cover to cover. Start with the last sentence. Read it.

Correct? Is the syntax correct? Is the spelling correct? OK Go to the next sentence from there. Start at the end.

Start from scratch. I suggest this for several reasons. One, it’s the exact opposite of what you expect, so you’ll see something new and fresh, rather than the way it was built.

Habit also tells us that we start browsing when we see things in a familiar way. This is not a common way of doing things. Third, frankly, I see more errors at the end of my resume than at the beginning.

It seems like the later we get into work history, the more likely you are to make mistakes when you start to get a little rushed. So start at the end. Work hard.

The last sentence to the first sentence of each section of your resume. Make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors. Make sure there are no misused terms or words, and look for specific words that may appear in your resume and, if misspelled, may be correct.

How to Deal with Job Rejection

Now, let me give you an example. Again, this is an old technology, but the word Novell (the IT term NOVELL) is often misspelled as NOVEL or the word novel. Maybe someone’s keyboard got stuck and only an L came out.

Whatever the reason, this is a common spelling error. The software doesn’t recognize it because novel is a word. Look for similar terms that might be on your resume, and if it’s misspelled, it might pass through the spell checker, and your resume won’t have those silly mistakes that cause people like me and hiring managers to leave, right? What was she thinking? What was he thinking? This is Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter.
