When a company wants to give you a written test

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter

Jeff Altman in Big Game Hunter discusses the mistakes many seasoned job seekers make when interviewing with companies that offer pre-employment testing.

Hello! I’m Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter, and today I’m going to be talking to you about companies that do written tests. Typically, for experienced candidates, you know, you’ve been out of school for five years or more, three years or more, and the company wants you to take a written test as part of their search process, and you’re willing to do that. But this is a common mistake.

You’re going to do that at about 70 or 75 percent of your ability. You give good superficial answers to the questions, but you don’t get the real structure, the substance of your knowledge, and the result is that if you give 70% or 75% of the answers, you are 70% or 75% of the candidates for the employer. They see those who are hungrier, who put in more effort to answer the question, and they will follow them instead of you.

So, what I remind you is, don’t underestimate yourself. Don’t sell them short. Let them give 100% effort on the test and don’t give them half-assed answers.

Provide them with as much detail as possible within the time frame you have to deal with. So this way they can see how much you really know and start to really accept you as a candidate.
