Both cards include annual companion fares, one of the most generous airline credit card benefits. Effectively, it’s a buy one, get one free deal (plus tax).

However, and here’s the big catch, you must have spent $6,000 or more in the previous anniversary year to earn companion fares with any card (except any card with a welcome bonus).

When you book a round-trip economy ticket on Alaska Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines, you can use a companion fare to book a second ticket on the same reservation, starting at $122 (fares start at $99, plus tax, at $23).

Companion fares must be redeemed within 12 months of issue, but actual travel can take place after this, extending their validity to almost two years. Even better, both travelers can earn full points on the flight and be eligible for an upgrade.

Cardholders don’t even have to fly, but they do have to pay for their flights using their Atmos Rewards card. Depending on how you redeem your companion fare, it can be worth hundreds of dollars.

This is especially true on some of the airlines’ more expensive routes, such as between the continental U.S. and Hawaii, and can completely offset either card’s annual annual fee.

Both cards also earn tier points based on spending, helping you strive for elite status. The rate is 1 tier point per $3 spent, with no upper limit.

Discount

Both cards offer $100 off an annual Alaska Lounge+ membership when you pay with the Atmos Rewards card.

Redeem points for Atmos Rewards Ascent and Atmos Rewards Business

There are several valuable ways to maximize your Atmos reward points.

For short-haul flights on Alaska Airlines, such as from Portland, Ore., to San Francisco, you can redeem up to 5,000 Atmos bonus points per leg of your trip. Even for long-haul flights, economy class awards typically start from 12,500 points.

If you prefer a first-class experience, long-haul domestic flights usually cost 50,000 points, but first-class on shorter flights can be as low as 15,000 points per leg.
