Cracking Case Study Interviews
Today I’m sharing tips on how to ace your case interviews and land a job at a top consulting firm. I’m Jeff Altman, big game hunter. Across the globe, people hire me not to provide any bachelor’s degree coaching and career advice, but because I make it easier for people to apply for jobs, recruit more effectively, manage and lead better, deal with workplace issues, or career transitions. I’ll help make it easier for you so you don’t have to Learn through trial and error.
So whether you’re a recent graduate or a seasoned professional, I’m here to give you some reminders or observations about the case interview process, including how to prepare for the interview and how to impress the interviewer with your problem-solving skills.
So first you have to really understand the case. Be very careful to fully understand the case you receive. Take notes to make sure you fully understand the situation and the issues that need to be addressed. Ask questions for clarification. Got it? Ask questions for clarification.
The second point is a matter of construction. Once you have a good grasp of the case, start structuring the problem, which means breaking it down into smaller manageable pieces that you can work on. Think about the different categories of information you need to collect. So again, ask clarifying questions as this will help you ensure you fully understand the question. You will get more information, clarify any ambiguous or unclear points, and confirm your understanding of the question.
For example, in this case, what is the main goal of the organization’s company? Can you explain the main challenges or issues facing your company or organization? What potential solutions have been considered or implemented? Can you clarify any industry-specific terminology or jargon used in the case? Are there any financial metrics or data points that are particularly relevant to this case? Can you provide more details about your company’s target market or customer base? How does the company’s current strategy fit into its overall business model? Are there any regulatory or legal factors affecting the company’s position? What are the company’s strengths and weaknesses in this case? Can you explain the timeline or deadline the company faces?
These questions are designed to help you better understand the case and identify any gaps or areas where more information is needed. By asking these questions or these types of questions, you can demonstrate your ability to think critically and solve problems methodically and in a structured approach.

Next, please analyze the information. Once you have a clear understanding of the problem, start analyzing the information you gathered. Use frameworks and models to organize your ideas and insights.
A popular framework used in case interviews is MECE, or as Barbara Minton who created it pronounces it “meece,” but you know, choose whichever way you’re more comfortable with. Mutually exclusive collective exhaustive framework. It ensures that all potential solutions or options are covered and there is no overlap between them. For example, when analyzing a market, you can use Meese or MECE to segment the market into different segments based on demographics, psychographics, and behaviors and show that each segment is distinct and does not overlap.
Another model is the 4P – Product Price Promotion Place framework, often used in marketing cases. This framework allows people
Analyze the different elements of a marketing strategy and how they work together to achieve desired results.
For example, if asked to analyze a new product launch, you can use the 4P framework to analyze the product’s features, price point, promotion strategy, and how it will be distributed to different markets.
A third useful framework is the SWOT Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats analysis, which is used to evaluate the internal and external factors of a company or organization. The framework allows one to identify areas where a company can improve and potential opportunities or threats that could affect its success. For example, when analyzing a company’s financial performance, you can use a SWOT analysis to identify areas where the company can improve profitability (such as reducing costs or increasing revenue), as well as potential threats to its financial stability (such as changes in the regulatory environment). or competition intensifies. Consider different solutions to the problem and their potential impacts. Communicate your findings.
Obviously, once you have analyzed the information, you must communicate your findings clearly and concisely using charts, graphs, and other visual aids to help communicate your ideas. Make sure you explain your thought process and reasoning. Develop recommendations.
What did you forget when answering questions in a case study interview?
After analyzing the information and communicating your findings, it’s time to develop recommendations. Consider the pros and cons of different solutions and make recommendations based on your analysis. Explain why.
Summarize your conclusions. It’s very simple. Summarize your conclusions and make sure you have addressed the original questions. Be prepared to answer any follow-up questions and defend your recommendations. Remember, the key to a successful case interview is to stay calm, focused, and analytical. It’s that simple.
Use these steps as a framework, but be flexible and adaptable to the specific situations you encounter. Practice, prepare. By doing this, you can master case interviews and get the job you’re interviewing for.
