A company I was interviewing with asked me to draft a proposal to bid for business for one of their clients. I was pretty sure I was being scammed, but deep down I always had it so I did it. Am I wrong?
You are interviewing for a senior consulting position with a company. You’re going to be their partner, and they say to you, “Before we invite you to join, we want you to write a proposal for this organization on these terms.” Should you do that? I’m Jeff Altman, big game hunter. People hire me to provide no-nonsense job search coaching and career advice around the world. I make the process of finding a job and being successful easier.
This was the topic of a post someone shared on LinkedIn. He said, “I have a 90 percent feeling that I’m being lied to, but that 10 percent is enough to prove that he’s real and that’s probably true.” It happened to him, so he did it. Like most people in this situation, you’re in for a free consultation. Never offer a company a free consultation.
Now, if they said, “We’ll pay you to do this,” well, that’s totally fine. If they say, “You know, we want you to whiteboard a hypothesis and do it as a concept,” as long as it’s not written down and they’re not taking notes, then do it. But I would just say, if you’re asked to actually do a proposal and put in all that kind of work, don’t do it. It’s a free consultation and they have the opportunity to sell the business and you get nothing.
