Believe the opinions of others more than your own

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter

What happened reminded me of how easy it was for me, and I suspect you trust other people’s opinions more than your own. Let me give two examples.

Welcome to Big Game Hunter. I’m the head coach at JobSearch.Community. Several episodes came out at the same time, which prompted me to want to do this video, so I started with the non-political ones and then moved on to the political ones. Non-politically, I remember an acquisition a few years ago where a company bought a young startup for an unheard of amount of money for such a young company.

The acquirer, in this case Google, acquired YouTube, a company with no profits, no revenue, no potential, everyone said. How will they monetize it? There are headlines there. They spent nearly two billion dollars on this company.

Who are they, are they crazy? There’s no potential here. The video is new. Like, what are they going to do? Now, I want to give you a perspective, last year I saw Google’s revenue was $10 billion.

Now, I want to do a quick recap here to make sure I’m quoting this correctly. Google’s annual revenue is $10 billion. It is growing at a rate of 40% every year.

Revenue is 10 billion, with annual growth of 40%. Do you think Google has made its money back and more? How can we believe these geniuses who don’t see the potential and just accept what they say? In the modern era, we’re dealing with a politically complex situation where Russia’s involvement in the U.S. election would have undue influence on Trump, and there’s been collusion ever since, all the way up until yesterday, as I was recording this, former FBI Director Comey came out and said some very simple things, including, yes, Russia was involved in the election. No, there’s no evidence so far that the president was involved, even though there’s been a lot of horrible stuff out there, and I’m not going to let him know the answers.

I just have to take the FBI director’s position and say that a lot of you believe everything you’re told. I know I’m easily seduced by this kind of thing, and I want to remind you, and myself, that just because people have an opinion doesn’t mean it’s right. Just because they speak eloquently, doesn’t mean they’re right.

Take a moment to step back. Think for yourself and if you don’t know, stop and wait for the situation to become clear instead of getting so vehement on one position or another. I want to make it clear that this has nothing to do with politics.

There’s more to it than that. So, sit back, relax, and wait for the dust to settle. You don’t have to get all the right answers.

If anything, admitting you need help will be a huge boost for you. You will learn more. You can ask your own questions and draw your own conclusions without having to cede your power and knowledge to others.
