Beautiful Abyss: Jennis’s Art Singing

The figures of the illustrator transformed into exquisite artist Janice Sung seem to float like a near candy milk ghost in a natural setting, whether in a small mat pond or a garden. She recently exhibited at the gallery at the heart of the Los Angeles Gallery, the first time the artist has used physical media. While you can certainly see the influence of Yoshitaka Amano, one of the inspirations in her work, singing the subtle, sensibility to the natural elements and the mysticity of illusion, her work is all her own, which seems to start from another place. We asked the artist some questions about her new work and the transition from digital to physical media.

In your new work, the Abyss, there is a character that surfaces, mostly submerged, surrounded by koi fish. There seemed to be a suspicious expression on her face. Her lips were as bright as adjacent koi. Can you tell us what she might be thinking? It seems she has a story to tell… Should we believe her intentions?

“The Abyss” has a unique meaning to me, and she is the third part of the series. I imagined her as a mysterious residence, deep in the waters, accompanied by her koi companions. I deliberately shrouded her intentions in an ambiguous way, inviting the audience to approach her cautiously, reflecting the experiences of the people who met her. Her form is not bound by human image. Instead, it may be completely unconventional.

You use a large area of negative space in your painting. Is the composition of your art production process at the forefront?

Yes, composition plays a key role in my painting process and is one of the cornerstones that unite the entire work.

The numbers in the paintings, although most of them are not dressed, are dressed in interesting ornate jewels. Do you design your own jewelry? Do they exist? And, don’t I?

I love browsing magazines and Pinterest as an inspiration for my jewelry work in my paintings. I love combining all kinds of gorgeous elements to create unique designs that complement the theme. The idea of developing a jewelry collection in the future sounds exciting.
