Why is it harder to find a job than to work?

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter
Since launching my podcast, No BS Job Search Advice Radio, in November 2010, I’ve been telling people that the skills needed to get a job are different from the skills needed to complete the job. Let me explain why finding a job is harder than getting a job.
I’m Jeff Altman, big game hunter. I’m a career coach who helps people find jobs, recruit more effectively, manage and lead, and do a variety of things related to workforce success. Why is it harder to find a job than to find a job? This is a question I get asked.
This sounds like my introduction to my podcast, No BS Job Search Advice Radio, which is the #1 job search podcast on Apple Podcasts, because I’ve been saying this for years. I started this podcast in November 2010. When I record this, it’s October 2019.
I’ve said the same thing over and over again and I can tell you exactly why. The answer is, how often do you look for a job? each year? Every few years? If you are a contractor doing temporary work every month? Every few months? And the different elements of job hunting, resume writing, interviews, negotiations, second interviews, third interviews, building your own brand. How often do you do these? Malcolm Gladwell popularized the idea of the “10,000 Hour Rule,” the idea that spending 10,000 hours focused on a task under the guidance of an expert can make you an expert.
Gladwell points to the example of the Hamburg Beatles as the incubator for their success. They spent weeks and even months performing together to develop their expertise. For example, for those of you who are looking for a job, how many hours of practice have you done, how much supervision of your interviews have been done by others, even if you’re a hiring manager and you think you know how to interview because you’ve been interviewing people for yourself for years, as you will find at some point or have found out, it’s a completely different experience when you’re sitting on the other side of the desk.
You know what you are looking for. You don’t know what other people are looking for. I just want to say that you don’t have much experience in job hunting, but you have gained a lot of professional knowledge in the process of working.
This is the real difference. The skills needed to get a job are not the same as the skills needed to do the job, so you don’t have a lot of experience. You need counseling.
You need advice. I’m not here to promote myself. This is what I do professionally.
I’m simply saying you need help because this is not your strong suit. Hope you find this helpful. I’m Jeff from The Big Game Hunter, please visit my website TheBigGameHunter.us. You can watch, listen, or read more to help you find a job faster.
