Jean Paul Langlois’s paintings

Jean Paul Langlois’s paintings blend 1970s science fiction with his young Westerners, while also exploring the artist’s connection to his own local and non-local roots. In his old western scene, you might also see the characters from Planet of the Apes or Saturday Morning Cartoon. His Origin Story series reimagines “ordinary family stories and reinterpret them through movie shots.”

“Using supersaturated colors, references to art history and a stale film contrast, he tries to understand alienation from his own cultural background, including indigenous and settlers,” his website says. “His work is an examination of his own life, a study of reinterpreting family stories through the use of characters and patterns in his weaned pop culture. The result is a very recognizable familiar character style in a world of their own bright colors and flat spaces.”
