Fidencio Fifield-Perez – Boooooom! – Create *inspiring *community *art*design *music *movie *photo*project

Featured works by artist Fidencio Fifield-Perez. Fifield-Perez received a BFA from the Memphis Academy of Arts and an MFA from the University of Iowa. He is currently an assistant professor of painting at the University of California Davis. Fifield-Perez’s work was born in Oaxaca, Mexico, but grew up in the United States and studied borders and people who traveled through them. His interdisciplinary practice focuses on the importance of paper ephemera, a self-view that is discarded every day after achieving its purpose. Fifield-Perez started collecting envelopes and other documents out of reporting to USCIS his need to enter the United States in order to qualify for DACA. The legitimacy of the existence of or lack of status permeates his practice, including painting, printing and collage.

“The painting’s envelopes are configured as an intimate portrait of the only house I created for myself, moved around the country, and mourned with the looming threat of the abolition of DACA. Plant painting is a map of personal and official physical and metaphorical correspondence. Rubber maps of plants were abandoned outside the University of Iowa University and the art staff at the wedding of my wife and my wife’s world; rituals; the only other professors I met to my plants. Throughout the process.”
