If you haven’t roasted cabbage yet, it’s time to start. This simple roasted cabbage made with only four ingredients is great. The cabbage is sweet when cooked and smoked on the grill, with crisp edges worth fighting for.

My family absolutely loves roasted cabbage (yes, even the kids)! Also, you don’t have to serve as you used to. You can chop it up and use it in recipes that require a cabbage mixture to attract the smoky flavor! Or you can make it simple and serve it with some grilled chicken, grilled pork or swordfish for outdoor dining.

If you are looking for more grilled vegetarian options, try the following: Roasted cauliflower, roasted bean fruit, roasted tomatoes or roasted butternut squash.

Which kind of cabbage can be roasted?

Although this recipe requires traditional green cabbage, you can also roast red cabbage and napa cabbage. Each will have a slightly different flavor, with the red cabbage slightly sweeter and the Napa cabbage almost celery. Savoy cabbage can be hard to grill because the leaves are not too together.

Additionally, you can make grilled Brussels sprouts, which is also part of the cabbage family.

How to roast cabbage

You can easily make roasted cabbage in just a few steps.

  1. Trim the roots: Cut a small piece from the end of the bottom (root) of the cabbage, be careful not to cut too much root so that the cabbage stays together.
  2. Oil and Seasons: Brush both sides with olive oil and season generously with steak or roasted seasoning.
  3. Slice the volume. Place it on a sitting cutting board so that the flat end is on the cutting board. Cut the top to the bottom into 3/4 to 1 inch thick slices to create a steak. Also, you can cut the cabbage into wedges instead of steaks, although they may take several minutes to cook.
  4. Grill on medium and high temperature: Let the first side be cooked undisturbed for a good burn, then carefully flip with a wide spatula.

Can I add other vegetables to the grill at the same time?

Absolutely. Onions, chili, zucchini and mushrooms are all well roasted next to the cabbage. Just adjust the cooking time according to the size and texture of each vegetable.

Recipe exchange

Here are some ways to change the recipe to make it its own:

  • Seasoning: Any type of barbecue seasoning is suitable for this recipe, ideally pepper-based. For something different, try lemon pepper, Cajun seasoning or curry powder.
  • Oil: I used extra virgin olive oil, but any type of olive oil works fine and avocado oil works too.
  • Add cheese: After grilling, sprinkle with Parmesan, feta or blue cheese for added flavor.
  • Citrus finish: After grilling, squeeze fresh lemon or lime juice over the cabbage to brighten it.
  • heating: If you like a little spice, drizzle with hot sauce, chili oil or a bunch of red pepper flakes.
  • Sweet Smoky: At the last minute of grilling, brush the caramel edges with a little maple syrup or grilling sauce.
  • Add vinegar: End the splash of apple cider vinegar or balsamic vinegar to balance the acidity of the charcoal.

How to eat roasted cabbage

Traditionally, I use roasted cabbage as a side dish and serve with any protein I happen to cook on the grill. But when you think of other options for offering roasted cabbage, you can definitely get more creativity.

  • Used as a grilled cabbage steak Used for vegetarian main courses. Drizzle with olive oil and add some chopped cheese and chopped nuts to make it bigger. You can even add some beans to the protein.
  • Cut into roasted cabbage Make smoked coleslaw with this delicious roasted cabbage.
  • Drizzle with cabbage Serve with some homemade ranch seasonings and extra lemon juice.
  • Cooking rice Use some eggs, vegetables, soy sauce and ginger and then swap the cabbage mixture for roasted cabbage. This will make the fried “rice” smoky!
  • Add some sweetness to the dish And add slices of apple on the grill. The sweetness of apples pairs with the earthy cabbage.
  • Add to the smoky smell Use roasted cabbage instead of regular spicy cabbage and corn salad! Smoky flavor combines with corn, spices, pepper and lime lime salad seasoning.
  • Throw roasted cabbage In different types of marinades and vinegars, such as balm marinades or light Italian seasonings! For simple preparation, just rub with the same marinade or spice on the meat.
  • Turn into some delicious vegetarian tortillas Frescoes with black beans, avocado sauce, salsa Roja and Queso. Drizzle some lime cream on top!
  • Cabbage and bacon Have a delicious side dish. Chop some crispy bacon and add the roasted cabbage.

How to store leftover roasted cabbage

If you happen to have leftovers, this is what you should make for them.

  • refrigerator: The remaining roasted cabbage will be kept in the refrigerator for 4-5 days, although it may lose its crisp texture.
  • refrigerator: Frozen and roasted cabbage for up to 3 months. Note that there may not be the same texture when thawing.
  • thaw: Melt it in the refrigerator overnight.
  • heating: Heat the cabbage in the oven or under the broiler to make it crisp.
  • Leftovers: Chop the remaining cabbage and use it in your favorite coleslaw recipe!

Frequently Asked Questions

This is the most common problem in making this roasted cabbage.

How to roast cabbage wedges with foil?

Another popular option when cooking cabbage on a barbecue is cooking in foil. Honestly, this is not my favorite choice because of the cabbage steam in the packaging. It will have a smoky flavor but without the delicious crisp edges.

That being said, it’s still delicious. Simply cut the cabbage into wedges, season and wrap in foil. Cook for 10-15 minutes, spin a few times until cooked to your preference.

Why leave some core in cabbage?

Leave a small portion of the core intact place the cabbage slices (or “steak”) together grill. If you take too much out, separate layers and spread on the grill.
