Dara Schuman’s rhythmic layered ship embraces intuition – Huge

Experiments are the driving force in Dara Schuman’s ceramic practice. In her Chicago studio, the artist recalls striking geometric forms that seem to be stacked, ribbed and nearly architectural. Her jewel color volume containers wear earthy and bold glaze with a mid-New Century modern retro flavor.

“As time goes by, I find that my best work comes from exploration rather than control,” the artist explained. Schuman sat in front of the pottery wheel, allowing her thoughts to melt before her subconscious mind could be held accountable. “Let the clay guide me is my favorite medium,” she shared.

When Schuman discovers the methods and actions of pasting, she uses these processes as motivation to see how far she can push clay and skills. Often, this approach naturally leads to the feeling and inherent harmony of iterative works.

Schuman is currently excited about lighting and has been trying to use chandeliers and sculpture lights. She also has a series of cups for a series of cups next month for store updates. Find more from artists on her website and on Instagram.
