About LinkedIn, advice, skills and endorsement are important

Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter
When I bought my last car, I reviewed online to see what the owner thinks about the manufacturing and model before contacting the dealer. People have given me a lot of great information that allows me to be satisfied with my car choice and negotiate prices. After all, people are very generous online when sharing information. That’s true for books, music and many other things (including your expertise).
Suggestions, skills and endorsement are a way to demonstrate LinkedIn’s social proof for you and your abilities. Recommendations are long-term recommendations people provide for you and your work. Because LinkedIn allows you to filter before approving their profile pages, there is no need for wrong suggestions. But an organization can tell what they want by looking at their needs – they do look at them.
Imagine you try to hire someone and you see a candidate gaining recognition for a specific skill four times. Will your impression of them be as impressive as the 40 times you recognize them? 140 times? 440 times? There is also an impact on LinkedIn’s skills and recognition, as well as the textures provided through suggestions.
Since companies scan LinkedIn profiles between resume and profile, they noticed the advice and checked whether you repeatedly endorsed the skills and experience you claimed to have on your resume. After all, they notice that the specific skills or experience required for your position may be relatively less, and you receive more skills. This sends a clear signal to them: your expertise is truly at the right place. Your LinkedIn profile needs to demonstrate consistency with your claim to be an expert when applying for a position.
Additionally, if you are “hunting” by the company to take on roles, advice, skills and recognition, it can be clearly communicated whether you are just getting involved in something or whether you are an expert.
So, how do you build advice, skills and recognition?
This is what you should do throughout your career. You need to ask people to write recommendations for you. Every time you complete important work, you will give advice to those who actively benefit. Recommend them too. Always appreciate the reciprocity rate on LinkedIn.
Only people’s skills are recognized and will be important to them. As a coach (before that, executive recruiter), I have recognized software development lifecycle skills over 100 times. What I actually know about this skill will fit in the thimble, but over 100 people think it is an important skill. Why?
Writing advice, skills and recognition on LinkedIn is a powerful and effective way to build a brand in your area of expertise, so when a role may appeal to you, both business and third-party recruiters can find you and contact you and discuss opportunities with you.
After all, people who succeed are not always the smartest or hardest job (although it’s a great quality to have). The leading one is the one who is alert to opportunities. Sometimes these are inside your organization. Usually, they will not be outside your company.
Improve advice, skills, and recognition should be part of your career brand strategy to attract people to their attention and distinguish them from others. It doesn’t take long, but it should be done regularly.
