Faith xlvii sewed textiles made from world maps and currencies to explore the “veins of the world’s veins” – Huge

In our increasingly global society, we all need technology to thank us for the unprecedented connection we enjoy, whether we actually fly or sail anywhere and have face-to-face video chat halfway around the globe. It’s easy to forget that the direction of turning we use on phones or locations marked on social media is built on proven simulation maps that have been used for centuries. For South African artist Faith XLVII (formerly), drawing, money and national symbols provide a foundation for similar foundations for the ongoing series Deconstruction of value and Chaos theory. She cut off the old map, discontinued currencies and flags, sewing them back into the patterned tapestries. The works will also be unveiled later this month on Heron Arts.

Solo exhibition of Faith XLVII, Venarum MundiThis means the Latin word for “the vein of the world” – a review of “the economic and geopolitical system that makes up our world”, the gallery says. Through colorful quilt-like works, the artist is interested in changing and shaping our global reality, challenging values, boundaries and history.
