In an immersive mixed media tapestries, Lillian leaves reflect patterns and existence – huge

Lillian Blades revels in the interaction of light, materials and space, creating vast and immersive devices that reflect the way we experience patterns and textures. By the veilnow presented at the Sarasota Art Museum is the artist’s first institutional solo exhibition, bringing together a series of large-scale works by artists located in Atlanta.
The blades use a multimedia approach to tapestries, combining fabrics, stained glass, wood, acrylic and found materials to create a scintillating surface. She paused some of the debris from the ceiling, winding through the gallery’s spaces, such as mixed media curtains, while other combinations hung on the wall. Colored light bounces onto the floor, loose lattices cast dramatic shadows onto surrounding walls.
“My patchwork veil is a wired tapestry for images and textures…I want it to feel complex but simple at the same time,” Blades said. “I want the details and objects to come with memory and trigger the audience’s association with certain patterns and textures.”
By the veil Continue in Sarasota until October 26. Find more information on the artist’s website and on Instagram.
