Movie lovers and YouTuber Alex Boucher are the “question to watch every movie.” He dissected some of the most preserved secrets and techniques in the film industry. His recent videos traverse Jim Henson’s universe Puppet movie (1979) and its seven film follow-ups raise the question: “How do puppets go out?”
Controlled by humans, the iconic puppet is expressed by actors like Dave Goldzo, Frank Oz (Miss Pig, Animals and Miss Forzo Bell), Richard Hunt, Richard Hunt (Scooter and Statler), and of course, Kermit is directed by Jim Henson himself. Puppet performances are usually performed in boxes so that puppets can hide under the set, but what happens when they enter the real world, lower limbs, etc.?
for Puppet movie, Henson and his team want the characters to interact with the human realm. “When you play characters (basically similar to cartoons), you put them out in a very realistic world – you can say outdoors – and for me, there are other realities.”
Boucher is fascinated by the way filmmakers use to make the puppet group look perfect for riding a bike or sitting on the stage alone. Prior to widespread use of CGI, these films were accomplished through in-camera effects. “What has puzzled me over the years for fantasy is when the puppet seems to get rid of the puppet and become a bit of a knowledgeable creature,” Boucher said.
