Mark Zuckerberg Notification Meta staff today introduced them to the new Super Smart Team. The memorandum has been obtained, which lists the names and BIOs of recently hired employees, many of which come from rival AI companies such as Openai, Anthropic and Google.
Over the past few months, Florida CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been recruiting Frenzy to poach some of the most popular talents in AI. The social media giant has invested $14.3 billion in AI and hired its CEO Alexandr Wang to run Meta’s super smart lab. News of the memo was first reported by Bloomberg.
“We will call our overall organization, Meta Super Smart Lab (MSL). This includes all our foundations, product and equity teams, and a new lab focused on developing next-generation models,” Zuckerberg wrote in a memo on Monday. Meta declined to comment.
Zuckerberg introduced Wang, who will serve as the company’s “chief AI officer” and leader of MSL, as well as former Github CEO Nat Friedman. Friedman will integrate the new lab with Wang, focusing on AI products and applied research.
Here is a list of all new employees in Zuckerberg’s memo. It is worth noting that employees who join from Openai’s Zurich office are not included.
- Trapit Bansal: The open O-Series model’s RL on the idea chain pioneered RL.
- Shuchao BI: GPT-4O voice mode and O4-Mini’s CROCEATOR. Previously, LED multi-mode training was performed at OpenAL.
- Huiwen Chang: CREATOR generated by GPT-4O images and previously invented Maskit and Muse Text-to-Image Architectures in Google Research.
- Ji Lin: Helps build 03/O4-Mini, GPT-4O, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.5, 40-Imagegen and operator inference stacks.
- Joel Pobar: Anthropomorphic inference. Previously, META in HHVM, HACK, FLOW, REDEX, performance tools and machine learning lasted for 11 years.
- Jack Rae: Gemini’s former technical leader in training and Gemini 2.5’s reasoning. LED Gopher and Chinchilla’s early LLM efforts at DeepMind.
- Hongyu Ren: Cocreator for GPT-4O, 4o-Mini, O1-Mini, O3-Mini, 03 and O4-Mini. Previously, he led a group of open training.
- Johan Schalkwyk: a former Google researcher, an early contributor to Sesame, and a technology leader at Maya.
- PEI Sun: Training, coding and reasoning for Gemini by Google DeepMind. The last two generations of Waymo’s perception model were created before.
- Jiahui Yu: 03, 04-Mini, Cocreator for GPT-4.1 and GPT-4O. Previously, he led the Perception Team at Openal and led the Multimodal at Gemini.
- Shengjia Zhao: Chatgpt’s Cocreator, GPT-4, all mini models, 4.1 and 03. LED LED synthesis data was previously at OpenAL.
