Elon Musk continues Grok 4 was unveiled Thursday, Xai’s latest AI model, with his multi-billion dollar initiative to rivals Openai and Google. Musk claims without citing detailed evidence that the standardized test of the model and demonstrates knowledge of a doctorate in a variety of different disciplines.
“Grok 4 is a graduate student of everything,” Musk said in an hour of live broadcast that started midnight in New York. “As for academic issues, at least, Grok 4 is better than a doctorate in every discipline. There are no exceptions.”
XAI did not immediately respond to Wirire’s request for comment, about whether it plans to publish an official technical report on the Grok 4 to detail its features and limitations. Competitive AI developers such as OpenAI and Google often publish similar publications for their models.
Users can access Grok 4 through the Grok website or app for $30 per month. Access to the larger version, called the Grok 4 weight, costs $300 per month. Later this year, XAI’s goal is to release other models suitable for software encoding tasks and generate videos, according to a demonstration on Thursday.
Musk, who serves as XAI CEO, has not addressed recent criticisms of Grok. Over the past few days, Musk’s built-in AI version of X social media platform has praised Adolf Hitler and has provided an anti-Semitic response to multiple tips from X users. In response, XAI, which owns X, announced Tuesday that it would take action to “ban hate speech before the Grok post on X.” On Wednesday, X’s CEO Linda Yaccarino announced that she would leave the company without elaborating on her reasoning or plans.
On Thursday’s live broadcast, Musk said that according to his “biological neural network”, AI systems should be optimized to “seek truth to the greatest extent” and encourage “being real, glorious, beautiful things like values you want in a child who eventually grows into a strong and powerful.”
Musk co-founded XAI with XAI after Openai’s release of Chatgpt in 2023 and triggered a surge in investment in generating AI technologies that can automatically produce text, code, audio, images and video. Xai launched the first version of Grok in November of that year, and the Grok 2 debuted last August. Grok 3 released last February is available for free.
Musk said Groke’s purpose is to have rumors and a sense of rebellion. XAI said on its website that its mission is to create accurate AI systems and help people gain knowledge.
Thursday’s late night product announced the start of an hour and featured Musk, sitting on the sofa with two Xai colleagues in front of a dark background. The trio boasted about Grok’s capabilities, showing slideshows designed to show how the model outperforms other AI programs. But Musk also admits that it still has huge weaknesses.
“These are still raw tools, not the kind used by serious commercial companies,” he said.
Musk predicts that Groke will discover new technology next year, if not later this year. But, he said, “Sometimes it may lack common sense and has not invented new technologies or discovered new physics.”
