Jeff Altman, the big game hunter discusses a big mistake people make while on LinkedIn.
Jeff Altman, Big Hunter and I want to talk to you today about one of the mistakes I keep seeing on LinkedIn, so too many people are making it with their profile. This is what I call a frivolous profile. Yes, thin profiles, thin LinkedIn profiles.
Maybe you’ve written two lines under each employer and you have this huge summary. You know, maybe you are the opposite. Not the contrary is a good example.
But, you know, suppose you keep seeing the profile I’ve been seeing all the time, two lines under each employer, two lines under the summary. How do you think people will find you? Seriously, how do you think people will find you unless they already know you? Part of your use of LinkedIn is an opportunity to attract you. People knock on your metaphorical door.
They reach out to you and say, hey, I have a chance. Let’s talk. After hearing the opportunity, you say yes or no.
Not before. back. Then, you know again, if you think about it, if you have two lines out there, no keywords, no SEO, there is nothing interesting about a potential employer or recruiter.
And if you fill in the summary area with all the keywords and write this huge summary and then nothing can support it under your work, then the employer doesn’t know when you did it. Now, you have to understand that employers are trained in resume experience and they will think that hunters are trying to trick them into interviewing. So when they see a lot of abstract stuff at the beginning of their resume and end up being relatively less, you know, like being able to tell you everything about the person’s life and their work, but working between each other and then separate from there, you find that this person does something good, but they did it 15 years ago.
No value. So, you know, you have to look at your profile as if it was an extended resume. I’m not saying it’s a longer resume.
This is an extension of your resume. So you have to have a high quality summary that outlines what you do and how to do it and some metrics. You want to provide contact information there, you know, email address, phone number, especially if you are looking for a job.
Then, from there, below each employer or consulting task, depending on your list, you want to get the support information you have in the summary. This will also provide you with SEO help with LinkedIn, as LinkedIn will see multiple instances of these keywords and help you rank higher. So, this is the big hunter Jeff Altman.
