Google Workspace is getting AI helpers called Gem. Here is how to use them.

Gems, Google’s AI expert, can be customized to specific tasks and rolled out in the workspace.

GEMS is available in the Gemini app and will now also appear in the side panels of Google Docs, Bedsheets, Drives, Slides, and Gmail, the latest in many large AI updates in Workspace.

Although the side panel will be equipped with prefabricated gems (if you like), users can also create their own tailored AI assistant. If you’re not sure why you need one of these, Google has some examples in its blog post: You might want to “leverage the ‘assistant gemstone’ tailored for your work role to help you provide a more relevant summary of what you communicate with internally, for example, you can “create a GEM created in a sales interaction for a specific company to understand sales interactions for a specific company.

How to use gemstones

Gems in the workspace can be accessed by clicking the “ask gemini” spark button in the upper right corner of the document. This opens a panel with preloaded gems and an option to “create gems” (Google has a separate help document on how to do this).

It is worth noting, though, that you may not see the gem immediately – Expanded on Wednesday, but Google said that “the possibility of feature visibility is likely to be more than 15 days.”

Google has recently expanded Gemini in a variety of ways, with AI-automated email summary in Gmail, integrated into your car, watch, and TV, and added to Chrome. Note that Google AI has also been working on certain basic issues.
