“Observation behavior” by artist Rachel Gregor

New work by Kansas City-based artist Rachel Gregor. Gregor graduated from the Kansas City Academy of Art in 2012 and studied abroad at Studio Art Centers International in Florence, Italy. Working primarily on gouache and paint, Gregor created layered symbolic works that blend observations, fantasy, art history and folklore. Her earth tones clash with alien green and neon orange, while acid ink washes and bright undertones illuminate the over-painting, which suggests no doubt gentleness. The shadow misses multiple light sources, suggesting a changing sense of time and space.

Her latest work, “Observation Behavior,” emphasizes the quieter, more meditative part of her practice. From the paintings of direct observation, Gregor’s self-portraits often appear in front of larger, narrative-based works that are ongoing, creating opportunities for interconnection and gameplay and experimentation. She also takes a more poetic approach and mindfulness to lie in intuition and instantaneity where it appears to be its own reward.

From September 6 to 27, Hashimoto contemporary people exhibited “Observation Behavior”.
