Secret interview skills: Get hired from competition
OK, let’s just start. If you are an executive or anyone who takes your career seriously, you know that networking is crucial. This is an important part of the game. But what if I tell you what most of us do is good, a little backward? We will break down a simple but very powerful strategy that lets you get out of the back of your desk and into the room where things actually happen. Does this sound familiar? You know, you’re going to spend hours making those perfect LinkedIn messages, sending emails, and it feels like you’re yelling at the void. It’s a chore, right? Your time rewards feel slim, and to be honest, it’s simply exhausting. If your socializing feels more like a busy job than building a real relationship, you are definitely not alone. So, here is an idea that can completely change your entire approach. It’s that simple. See where other executives are. This is a completely fundamental change. No longer just broadcasting yourself at home, but putting yourself in the event personally or virtually. This sounds too obvious, but many of us forget about this rule. Let’s give it a name. We call it the “visible principle.”
Now, it’s not just showing anything old. No, it’s about strategic visibility. Think about it. What’s more powerful? Send a hundred cold emails to Ethereum or become one of the 20 people in the roundtable of high-value executives? One is about quantity. The other is influence. It’s about being in the right room. OK, we’ve got the principles out there, but what does the right room actually look like in practice? Where are these places? Let us create a specific roadmap for you. Start with the easiest location to reach. So think of these as your base layer. These are open arenas. You have large industry conferences, and yes, virtual conferences are also important, and they are packed with your peers. Then there are executive roundtables and smaller peer groups to provide a more centralized environment. Hey, don’t sleep on webinars, especially those hosted by private equity firms or major thought leaders. They attract a very specific, very ambitious crowd. These are great starting points.

Being seen is one thing. This is the first step. But being remembered is the real goal. To build deeper and more meaningful connections, you must go beyond large open areas. It’s time to start looking for or planning a more unique space. Now, we are talking about internal circles. These groups are often highly loyal groups and are sometimes limited to invitees, such as YPO, Chief, or VISTA. Look, there is a reason for their uniqueness. They are designed to create a highly trusted environment full of reviewed peers. Entering these rooms is no longer just for being seen. It’s about being accepted into a community that builds the strongest relationships.
So, you know what to do. You know where to go. You’ve entered the room. Amazing. The most important part now is how. How do you really make your presence work? The good news is that it is not as complicated or terrifying as you think. Well, I hope you really take the next idea, because that’s a huge relief for many people. You don’t have to speak to be seen. Let me say it again. You don’t have to be the loudest person in the room. This is your official permission to relax. Being seen means a different, more thoughtful engagement. It all boils down to this very simple three-step approach. The first step is to appear directly. Seriously, this is half successful. The second step is to participate carefully. This does not mean you have to give a speech. It can just listen with concentration, ask a really insightful question, or connect with other people in the room. This is to add value, not noise. Then the third step is to follow up consciously. A specific personal comment that quotes your conversation is trumps a thousand universal LinkedIn requests.
So, if you take one thing, that’s it. We are completely flipping the script. We are moving from passive outreach (you know, endless emails on your desk) to active presence. Hopefully there is a difference between stumbled upon your digital signal and ensuring that the right person sees you where it matters and really impresses. The strategy is clear. The steps are very simple. You have learned about what, where, and how. The only thing left to do is do it well, go and do it. So, the real question I want to ask you is this. Where will you choose to meet next?
