Delta Air Lines is cutting back on its domestic route network, eliminating two routes.

The airline will stop flying between Atlanta and Santa Barbara, California, and between Salt Lake City and Fairbanks, Alaska, which first appeared on Cirium’s schedule and was later confirmed by an airline spokesperson.

The Salt Lake City-Fairbanks route operated last summer and was originally scheduled to resume in June 2026. However, the airline does not appear to be satisfied with the performance of the route as it has now been completely axed.

Going forward, Delta travelers traveling to Fairbanks can depart from Seattle year-round and from Minneapolis in the summer.

Delta Air Lines, meanwhile, will also cut one of its newest routes from Atlanta. The Atlanta-Santa Barbara route will launch in June 2024 as part of an expansion of the leisure route network. This is the longest route from Santa Barbara and has historically been connected primarily with flights from the larger cities on the West Coast.

While Atlanta is Delta’s largest hub, the airline may not be able to provide enough connecting traffic for travelers to and from Santa Barbara. Anyone flying into the California city from a point west of Atlanta would be better off connecting in a city like Denver or Phoenix rather than backtracking on a nonstop flight from Atlanta on Delta Air Lines.

Delta Air Lines uniforms can still be seen on Santa Barbara’s two daily flights from Salt Lake City. However, these short-haul flights are actually operated by Delta’s connecting partner SkyWest Airlines, so there won’t be any future Delta mainline flights from the airport.
