Large game hunter Jeff Altman offers job seekers more phone interview tips.
Two steps for phone interview: Pin it like a professional
Jeff Altman, a large hunter. I’m called “big game hunter” because I’ve been hunting for leaders and employee organizations for over 40 years. Even though I’ve done a video before, or did a video before a phone interview, I’d like to cover a few other points, you know I just said you already know you need to have a conversation in a quiet place, but there are some fun things you can do that will help you really do well in the phone interview.
You know, when the interviewer calls, you want to thank them for calling, and then you say, you know, I’ve read the job description, but, you know, can I understand what you’re looking for? What is my role in interviewing? So, this way, you can make sure you are on the same page as the interviewer. Often, it has evolved a little bit from creating a location description to the time you actually interviewed, and while the work might read a way on paper, in fact, they are sifting something a little different. So always take the time to ask them what they are looking for.
You know, another subtle thing is, asking them how long you wish we would say, you can simply say, I just want to make sure I have a timeline. They said, now, if they schedule an interview, can we speak a little bit? amazing! How much time should I leave in my calendar? Just know the time you will talk to them. Listen to their questions.
I can’t tell you how many times people start getting on and off on these long Tirades, I have to call them Tirades because after a while they don’t know what they’re talking about. They didn’t recall the question, they had asked them, do you remember my initial question? So try to answer questions in 45 seconds or less to keep point state. If you have to go for one minute, go for it.
But try to lengthen the answer to about 45 seconds and listen to what they ask about you. Along the way, you might want to sound like you’re thinking about your answer, like you’re a little reflective. What you are doing is.
They can’t see the notes in front of you, you’re writing down something. Another thing I will mention to you is. . . Seeing these headphones, right? If you have access to headphones, use them. I find that when I do radio shows, I’m hands-free and it’s very helpful when I make phone calls all day.
It only allows me to use my hands. I don’t develop cranks around my neck, which will hurt during my conversation. If you can, use your headset.
Finally, at the end of this, you might ask them, what happens next? When do you hope I will go back to the next step in the process? This gives you the feeling of the schedule and then, you know again, what I mean by nothing is the way you sound like you are anxious or nervous. It’s all about the behavior of that part. So you might just say it simply, so, thank you very much for the call.
When did you think I might hear about the next step in the process? Well, I have a lot of people to talk to. Of course, you have a lot of people to talk to. I just want to know your schedule.
Well, I hope we will contact you within a week to ten days. I hope I will call you tomorrow to schedule an in-person interview or other situations. Just have a timeline feel and then conclude that I just want you to know that I’m not particularly interested in this role.
I do look forward to hearing from you in your next step and I would love to go further. The company found it more attractive when it was hunted. One thing that especially does hiring managers is when they have to expand the offer they want to refuse.
So you want to express interest because usually, when hiring a manager decides who wants to make an offer, it is usually a difference. They have two people. They like them very much.
They both have the ability. The thing that puts it at the edge can be very simple because they think you are interested. So, this is Jeff Altman, the big hunter.
