Openai CEO Sam Altman said the company is bringing back GPT-4O and bringing rewards after the GPT-5 launch “a bumpier than expected.”
During the Reddit AMA (and on X), Altman said that the GPT-4O will soon be available to paid ChatGPT users again.
“Well, we heard everyone on 4o,” Ultraman said. “Thanks for the time to give us feedback (and passion!).” On X, Altman confirmed: “We will give users the option to continue using 4o. We will watch usage because we consider how long it takes to provide legacy models.”
Therefore, GPT-4O is alive to fight another day.

Why does Openai bring back GPT-4O?
Openai launched the highly anticipated GPT-5 model on Thursday, the smartest and fastest model to date. The GPT-5 also has a simplified system that works behind the scenes, and you can choose which version of the GPT-5 is best for users. Previously, users could select a specific model for each of their prompts. But shortly after its launch, ChatGPT users baked GPT-5 on Reddit and other social media platforms, calling it a “disaster” and “the biggest junk.”
Mixable light speed
Compared with GPT-4O, GPT-5’s “personality” is colder. Users also complained about abruptly deleting all other models from the Chatgpt model selector to ostensibly uniform GPT-5. Ironically, users’ previous criticism of Openai creating confusing model options that prove that you can’t please everyone.

Sam Altman and other OpenAI leaders held a pre-planned Reddit AMA on Friday. What they encountered was the massive demand to bring back GPT-4O.
In AMA, Altman also promises that the GPT-5 will improve rapidly.
“From today on the rise, the GPT-5 seems smarter,” Altman said. “Yesterday, the automatic industry went bankrupt and lost its job in part of the day, and the result was that the GPT-5 seemed clumsy. And, we’re doing some intervention in the way decision boundaries work to help you get the right model more often.”

Many users say they like the warmth and empathy of GPT-4O (and GPT-4.5), some of which compare the situation with the loss of friends overnight. However, GPT-4O also encountered major problems with squid and floating food, prompting Openai to apologize and adjust the model. Despite this, some users are still very attached.
Some users complained that they did not notice in advance that earlier models were removed from chatgpt. Nevertheless, this means that GPT-5 was developed to replace them.
“A big part of our goal here is to bring the new system to a place where we don’t want to use anything else,” Altman said. “We’ll work on that, but we’re totally content with good change management.”
