If you’ve been in business for 10+ years, do you think I should remove some years from my resume?
Fired? Hide your job end date. . . for a while
I would lean toward it if you’ve been an entrepreneur for a long time. But also consider the transferable skills you have. What do you do in terms of leadership, management, coaching, marketing? Put these things into your resume so people can see what’s transferable in your background, so you can address questions like: Does this person’s background match what we’re looking for? I can’t figure it out because they’re not that smart.
I’m not trying to be obnoxious here. They’re just not that smart. So, I believe you have to make it easy for them to see the right stuff.
If you make them work, they won’t get it. So, as an entrepreneur with over 10 years of startup experience, I would just say, look for the transferable skills you have. If you’re not sure, this is where chatGPT is very useful.
Helpfully, you can give it a prompt, something like “I’m updating my resume and LinkedIn profile.” I have been in business for myself for the past 15 years. Business was this and that, I did this, that, this, that.
Can you list 25 transferable skills that you think I might have and put them on a resume or LinkedIn profile? They will. . . chatGPT or Gemini or Claude, whichever or confused will give you some ideas. . . Some transferable skills. Look at the ones that are most valuable and accurate. Don’t just use their answer because it won’t be accurate.
Look at the things that work for you and are accurate to you so you can add them to your LinkedIn profile, your resume, your interview stories because chatGPT will give you some ideas on how to express yourself and that will be really helpful.
