How to become more disciplined

1. Be clear about the end result

You cannot achieve your goals and create new success stories without being productive and disciplined. However, many times great plans and ideas remain unused and never see the light of day in real life. Laziness and procrastination are often the cause of procrastination or inability to take action, and sometimes the connection between the two is wrong. There’s even a common assumption that procrastination is caused by laziness, but this is rarely true. On the one hand, introducing discipline and engagement into thoughts and processes can help overcome laziness. Procrastination, on the other hand, can be reduced by making the end result clearer, defining tasks (drivers) that will have real impact, and reviewing emotional health and engagement levels. – Amy Olawson Foronjeva, Change Coaching for Senior Leaders

2. Plan, act, guide and celebrate

Being disciplined will give you more freedom. Create a clear, focused plan. Set aside time for mission-critical action steps and avoid wasting time on “shiny object activities.” Have an accountability partner, coach, or mentor to guide, motivate, and empower you to get the job done. Last but not least, celebrate your wins, no matter how big or small. – Renate Plender, High Performance Transformation Coach

3. Stick to the schedule

Put yourself on your calendar, commit to 1 to 2 hours to complete the project, and set a completion date that holds you accountable. –Pastor Joanne Angel Barry Colon, holistic personal trainer

4. Take small steps

No one wants to think they are lazy. No one wants to procrastinate. We all slack off sometimes, usually to cope with times of exhaustion. People sometimes procrastinate because they avoid dealing with something that is emotionally difficult for them. In either case, ask yourself, “What’s possible now? What can I do to move forward in some way?” Don’t think about taking a giant step unless you’re ready to take it. Instead, do something. Taking small steps forward will help you achieve what you want. Do it again. here we go again. You’ll find that if you keep doing this, you’ll change your mind and accomplish what you need to do. – Jeff Altman, Leadership and Executive Coaching

5. Change your perspective

In order to overcome your tendency to procrastinate, you must find ways to change your view that work is boring or that you don’t enjoy/want to do it, and make it more interesting for you. Ask yourself: What would make this task more interesting? Can you play some music? Do some physical activity or dancing at home to energize yourself? Call a friend for assistance? What if getting things done didn’t have to be difficult or boring? – Dr. Adriana Popescu, Clinical Psychologist and Empowerment Coach

6. Respect time

Timing is everything! It’s about developing a plan of action that requires careful consideration when taking steps to complete a task. When time is too open, procrastination creeps in. Nothing breeds laziness more easily than not investing the time to complete a task or project. When time is respected, individuals begin to view it as a valuable asset. The best advice is to create a to-do list and add a time to start and complete it. Adding tasks to your electronic device helps you stay on top of them while on the go. Putting the items on your calendar into a written agenda can help you stay organized and stay on target. If a task is not completed, reassign it to another day with additional buffering priority. A quick look over the weekend to make sure everything is completed or to re-evaluate will help keep the flow of getting things done. Time buffers should be added to allow for flexibility in scheduling deadlines. Finally, have an accountability partner who can help you. – Paola Orizzi, Authors and speakers

7. Arrange everything

One way to overcome laziness and procrastination is to create a schedule and calendar. You should schedule what you need to get done throughout the day. Schedule your meetings, phone calls and even lunches. This way, instead of working around the clock, you’re getting work done but exhausted at the end of the day. – Pixie Lee, business coach

8. Visualize the final result

From cleaning out the pantry to completing an important project—and amidst all the other noise and joyful distractions—here are a few techniques I like to use:

  • Visualize the end result! Imagine the pantry is clean and empty, and your grandma’s desk has been repaired and ready for use in that charming space in your home. Based on your work project, write a first draft that feels like it’s finished, ready to go, and considered excellent in the office!

  • Schedule everything hourly; use soft colors for things you can cancel in order of importance and stronger colors for things you have to tackle anyway.

  • Remember, laziness drains your self-love, so take a small action now. When you imagine, organize, and love yourself more, you will feel happier!
