Mysterious phenomena and galactic shape rotation in Shane Drinkwater’s cosmic system – Huge

For Queensland-based artist Shane Drinkwater, self-imposed restrictions provide a key starting point for his work created with ink, pen, acrylic and collages – always in square formats with dimensions of about 50 x 50 cm. Arrows, crosses, points, and numbers build linear elements and patterns, while primary colors provide the basis for occasional green or gradients.

With a lifetime love for maps, passwords and astronomical charts, Drinkwater continues to explore the possibilities of fictional cosmic networks (previously). In some parts, concentric circles resemble charts of the solar system, while in others, references to comets or esoteric systems suggest imaginary work of atomic phenomena or alchemy experiments.

Drinkwater’s work has been recently included in the book Elements: Chaos, Order and Five Basic Forces, Published by Thames & Hudson. He is currently preparing for art fair works in Copenhagen and Paris this fall, as well as group performances by contemporary Gagné in Toronto. Find more information on the artist’s website and on Instagram.
