Have you ever had to negotiate or renegotiate your salary? Whether you are starting a new job or asking for a raise at your current company, this process can be daunting and terrifying. After all, you ask for a higher salary and think that means you need to be able to justify your demands. But what happens if your salary negotiation fails? If your salary negotiation fails, these are seven things. From taking the time to reflect to continuing to connect and practice negotiation skills, these tips will help you get back on track and prepare for your next successful negotiation.

Request for feedback

Feedback can provide you with valuable insights into the company’s thinking process, budget constraints, or other factors that may affect the decision, including financial problems encountered by the company’s business. Don’t you want to know about the company’s financial problems before you join? I remember when I was still doing the search, I negotiated a person I referred to a client. I have a strong reason why my clients should increase their offer. “He wants to join, but your market is $15,000.” “These are very hot skills.” “Jeff, we just received information from the CFO about the hiring freeze implemented due to the loss of the transaction. I could keep this offer active, but they removed it from my suggestion.” She and I agreed that this was not the time to join the company.

Take some time to reflect

First, take the time to think about the situation. In most cases, if your salary negotiation fails, it’s not because you’re doing something wrong. This is because the hiring manager can’t give you more. This doesn’t mean they don’t want you or value your skills or experience. Sometimes such decisions are beyond control. Most importantly, taking the time to reflect will help you stay calm and avoid making rash decisions, which will only lead you to a spiral.

It is not uncommon to think that you have too much information now. However, collecting it can help you identify ways to prepare for future negotiations and help find leverage for next use. An obvious example is if the data you collect shows that your industry job average salary is $170,000, but you currently offer a price of $145,000, you can use this information in negotiations.

Try to negotiate non-payment

Try to negotiate other forms of compensation rather than wages, as they come from different parts of the company’s budget. Are they willing to sign a bonus for you? How about the extra time for vacation? Can you get stock options or RSU (limited inventory units)? Don’t you need your flexible work arrangements in the office? If you can’t get them to increase their salary, can you convince them to increase their professional development budget? Many of these are trademarks of you as an employee and the person you are considering accepting a job offer.

Network or continue networking

Many people think that if their wage negotiations fail, it’s time to give up and stop networking. But the truth is that the network is even more important after the salary negotiations fail. Focusing on the web to find resources can help you understand why salary negotiations fail, rather than finding a new job.

Contact former colleagues and mentors and ask if they can recommend any books or other resources that can help you better understand negotiation salary and its factors. Be introduced to a coach you can report to and have an autopsy after it happens to understand that you could have done something different.

Remember that if you fail to get what you want from your current employer, you can also connect with people to find a better job. After all, someone you know can introduce you to someone you don’t know and who can provide an introduction to someone from another company.

Practice or continue practicing your negotiation skills

Continue to practice negotiations. After all, you will encounter negotiations in the future. Read books and articles, and watch videos on the topic. There are many salary negotiation books and videos that can help you understand the process better and help you succeed next time. There are also workshops, seminars and online courses on salary negotiations. Many local colleges and community colleges offer such courses. Please be aware of opportunities for your professional group and your association.

Stay positive. keep going

No matter what happens, stay positive and move forward. One of the most important things you can do after a salary negotiation fails is to stay positive. Negotiating a salary increase is normal whether it is at your current company or at the one you are considering joining. You may feel sad because you are not getting everything you need or what you originally offer. But you are not the first to experience this, you will not be the last one. If your salary negotiation fails, don’t let your mind be as crazy as self-criticism. After all, if you are like most people, you don’t have a lot of experience in negotiating salary, but their experience. Think of it as a learning experience and use it to prepare for you next time.
